I purchased these fenders to give my early thousands Trek 520 a classic look. These fenders are sleek, yet shine out against a darker frameset. Installation was not difficult. However, be prepared to purchase a few long 5 mil nuts and bolts for non-VO frames.
Overall, I am very pleased.
People comment on how nice they look all the time. I especially like how low the front fender comes down which keeps the water and snow off of my feet.
These are well built and thoughtfully designed. However, a few critiques, statements like "all well built bikes will have xyz, so we didn't include the 5 cent bolt that you now need to retrieve from the hardware store" are both mildly insulting and unhelpful. Maybe just include the bolts most commonly required by most bikes, and skip the peacockery? Other than that, these are lovely fenders.
Like many reviewers I found the installation to be quite challenging requiring a great deal of patience. I've installed about 1/2 a dozen sets of fenders, though this was my first set of VOs, and I've literally put complete bikes together from the frame up in less time than it took me to get these installed. Having done a bunch of installs I don't think the directions are all that bad but getting everything aligned, namely the curved part of the stay that goes around the outside of the fender and through the 2 mounting points, had me nearly ready to give up. My install also required a few trips to the hardware store but mostly for stuff (spacers and longer bolts) that were particular to my install. Regardless, if you haven't worked on bikes before this isn't the DIY project to start with. Either way I think the install would be easier with an extra set of hands if you can recruit somebody to help out.
The included hardware is pretty good though some rubber/plastic endcaps to go over the end of the stays once they are cut would be handy. I used a Dremel with a cut-off wheel to cut mine, much easier than a hack saw, but even after filing the ends to get rid of the burrs they still feel a little unfinished.
That being said I think they look great and those are 38mm smooth treaded Soma tires I managed to squeeze in there. When this bike becomes my main commuter next Spring I'm going to mount some more flat-resistant 32mm tires which will give me a bit more clearance as well.
The original fenders to my vintage Miyata 618GT were misplaced in a move and it is a relief to have the classic quality and feel back with these new VO fenders. They were a mini-nightmare to install (youtube has some helpful videos!) and I had to source some parts to fit the front fork but once installed they have so far worked well and I'm pleased with the purchase.
