"For urban use, commuting, touring, and light off-roading, the Sabot definitely delivers the goods." - GravelBike.com
Many VO staffers like large pedals, so we wanted to produce a high quality large-platform pedal that would be comfortable even when riding in thin soled shoes. We tested them in minimalist running shoes, leather dress shoes, hiking shoes, and even sandals.
Of course this style of pedal is great for urban riding, but we see other uses, too. More and more bike packers, long distance tourists, and adventure cyclists are riding with big BMX style pedals, and these make a more refined alternative.
The two-sided platform is a CNC-cut aluminum extrusion. It has loads of real estate to eliminate pressure points and all - approximately 100mm wide and 100mm long. There are 12 replaceable traction pins on each side of the pedal to offer great grip even when wet. We include rounded pins with the pedals so as not to damage street shoes, but they are easily replaced with more aggressive sharp pins.
Most existing pedals with large platforms use either loose ball bearings or are designed for BMX or downhill riding and use durable, but stiff, bushings. We designed a chromoly spindle that uses three sealed bearings, two inboard and one outboard. This makes for a very smooth pedal; it feels like a high-end road pedal, and the bearings are easy to replace. Weight is 408g per pair. Uses 6mm hex (Allen wrench) as well as flats (15mm pedal wrench) for easy installation and removal.
- Platform size: 100mm x 100mm

I ordered two sets sight unseen after researching pedals when the bushings in my other platform pedals needed maintenance sooner than I wanted to deal with. Was finding most high-quality platforms to be too aggressive and missing the mid-section support. I am using the black set on my year-round Minneapolis commuter (so, let's see how they hold up!), and the silver set on my wife's summer bike. My wife wears barefoot shoes and loves the feel of the pedal. I like the quality of the bearings and the construction. Just enough grip for when the trails get rough, but not enough to feel with the thinnest soled shoes. And they look great. I feel like I found the perfect all-round pedal with these.
I bought these for touring expecting I would want to add some pedal straps or toe clips for foot retention. After about 200km, on road and gravel, that's no longer a concern I have. They grip better than any touring pedal I've used. I PR'd most of my segments their first ride out. Some shoes actually grip them a little too good, to the point that I have to pick my foot all the way up just to reposition it (with the stock, rounded pins).
I was also a little worried about pedal strike with the wider platforms, but I've pedaled through some intentionally hard leans around a local traffic circle, and can't even get a pedal to strike on purpose (Breezer Doppler Pro with 650b x 48 WTB Horizons, for reference).
Smooth action, solid build, wide platform with A+ grip. Not much to complain about.
My only gripe is with some of the finishing details (Chrome/Silver model). They had a couple of deep scratches right out of the box, which I wasn't expecting, but they're going to get scratched eventually, so not really a problem, just a surprise. Also, the outside edges are wicked sharp (like new hockey skate sharp). They actually cut my leg open while I was installing them. Was thinking about softening them up with an emery board, but I'm a little worried that it will negatively impact the longevity of the finish.
Still a 5-star gravel/touring pedal in any book!
I put the Sabot pedals on to replace the sharp pedals my bike came with. These are easy to ride in dressy shoes and sneakers, without chance of ripping my skin off!
Just received my Velo Orange Sabot pedals and I love them! Very fast shipping. Beautiful packaging and beautiful quality pedals that are a joy to use. Thanks so much!
