I've been using these rims on my daily ride for nine months now, and I'd have to say they are pretty good. Here's a few things about my experience with them:
-Rims don't seem to wear too fast(Kool Stop salmon and black pads)
-Eyelets are nice
-No complaints on a 300+ mile loaded tour(System weight including rider about 300 lbs)
-No complaints with tubeless
-Very strong(Story: I was speeding down and inclined parking lot and cased the rear wheel on a sharp curb I flew over at an angle(hard enough to snakebite the under-inflated tire), resulting in two slits that I had to plug and stitch. There was no damage to the rim, and no truing was necessary. Couldn't tell that anything had happened to the rim at all.)
-Did take a bit to break in the polished braking surface
Rims are 36h 650b, Spokes are Sapim Race for both sides in the front and NDS in the rear, and Sapim Strong for the rear DS. Polyax Nipples. Laced by myself, admittedly at too low tension, which I need to fix. They have always worn 47mm Specialized Pathfinder Pro tires and been used with roller cam brakes.
I do wish there was a non-polished version available, both to lower cost and to have a little more aluminum for the brakes to wear through. There aren't many options for rim brake tubeless ready 650b rims.
These rims are great! I've built a set of 26" and 650b versions for different projects and both laced up true and round without issue. They've been holding up well to loaded touring on rough terrain.
My only gripe is that they don't offer a machined sidewall version for folks running rim brakes still. So I hit the sidewalls with a bit of medium coarse sand paper to give a bit of bite for my cantilever rim brakes, and I'm happy with the results even in the wet.
I've had a set of the old VO 650b Diagonale rims on my commuter for the last 8 years of daily NYC riding and they're still going strong. These are significantly more substantial feeling, so I've got no doubt they'll last forever.
Great work VO!
I wanted to write a review after a flawless first attempt at tubeless, and I think these rims have a lot to do with it.
I bought a pair of 700c/29er voyager rims for off road touring, and general go everywhere use. They aren't the widest rim (23mm internal) but after a lot of thought, this is actually perfect for the 2.2" I'll typically run, with an option of going down to 40 or 45mm to commute if I get a 2nd wheelset for 27.5" 3" plus use.
I bought Vittoria Terreno Dry to go with it, and started with tubes for the last month or two. But I kept getting flats in my front tyre (3 in 6 weeks!) due to tiny flecks of glass puncturing the tube. I bought some WTB valve stems and some orange sealant. I took the tube out, left one tyre bead seated, levered the other bead back on, and started pumping with a normal floor pump. To my surprise the tyre inflated normally, and with a couple of crinks and foomps the other bead seated. It stayed up for half an hour but slowly lost some air (mind you these tyres had already had micro punctures) I took out the valve core and poured in 100ml of orange sealant. Pumped up again, and road to work and back without problems, and pressure is still perfect this evening!
These rims are lovely to behold. Not much (or anything) like them. Not in 26" anyway. The only other rim (that I know of) that compares is the Velocity Cliffhanger and to get a polished rim they are significantly more expensive. Got these to build a set of wheels for my vintage Bridgestone MB-1 turned loaded touring rig. Wanted a rim brake / tubeless compatible/ wide and strong 26" rim that looked as nice as my hubs. Check. Check. Check. Check. The rims built up very well and set up tubeless super easy with my Rene Herse Rat Trap Pass tires. Quick delivery and well packaged. Thanks VO!!!
Ordered one pair for a customer, one for myself, super excellent Polish, set up super well tubeless with panaracer tires, will purchase again
