Growtac Brifters

These things are awesome. They are extremely intuitive and very easy to use. The problem with bar ends and (moreso) is not their friction mode, it’s the location. I’m running 9spd Shimano ant front triple. They are very easy to set up but the “spindle swap” was pretty finicky. Make sure you do it on a clean workbench with a tray or cloth underneath. It’s a logical process but the instructions are barely adequate so TAKE YOUR TIME. A wonderful product

Requires some patience but there is a lot to love

A solid option to shift 1x12 drop bar setup while using cable actuated brakes. I needed to swap out the internal pulley wheel to the included 46mm size to shift a 12s Sram Apex eagle rear derailleur but other than that, setup was easy. Set the limit screws, set the b-screw and it’s pretty much good to go, no need to fuss with dialing in indexes. Quite refreshing actually.

Levers feel great in the hand, somewhere between sram and Shimano levers, size wise. Shifting is a bit of a learning curve, especially the thumb button to shift up but overall quite satisfying when you hit your shifts. Shifting while standing is a bit of an adventure however, but it all gets easier and easier with each passing ride.

Works as advertised

I'm using a 90's 8 sp XT RD with a 9 sp cassette and a triple crank set up with a granny, middle, but no large ring on a 00's side pull FD. I switch between 3 sets of wheels/cassettes. I previously used bar end friction shifters. After one ride, the Grotac's shift every thing as advertised. I did not switch any pull ratios. The hoods are comfy but there is an open slot the thumb paddle uses that is noticeable but not necessarily in a bad way. I'm definitely going to enjoy moving the shifting from the bar ends to the brake levers. My biggest gripe so far is setting them up. A piece of the shifter body needs to be removed to thread the shifter cable in and the brake cable required some patience to thread it through. I dread the thought of a roadside broken cable. This part is really unfortunate. Hopefully, however, the cables will not need to replaced for a couple years and this will be a minor inconvenience. They are expensive but if you really like friction shifting and want brake lever shifting, this is your current choice.
