These Dia Compe ENE shifters are some of the best shifters of all time. These are so smooth because the ratchet equalizes upshift and downshift effort so perfectly that they will satisfy even the most demanding randonneur. These shifters are made by Dia-Compe, so the quality is first rate.

They work with 5-speed to 10-speed cassettes and freewheels and most common derailleurs. (Note: most SRAM derailleurs don't work with non-SRAM shifters.)

Sold as a left and right set.

Old School Cool

Fitted up right away, easy to install and work on. Shifts great. May need some blue threadlocker on threads to retain shifting pressure on bumpier roads/lots of shifting

Really nice and easy to install

Replaced my 10+ year old Shimano shifters on my a hybrid/fitness bike. They work fantastic and without issues mated to a Shimano deorde derailleur set 3x8. I ran the cabling internally in the handlebars and drilled out holes away from the handlebar grips.

From an Earlier Age of Cycling, yet Remaining Worthwhile

When index shifting was developed long ago, ordinary shifters such as these became known as friction shifters, yet ordinary shifters are still welcome because they allow a rider's fingertips to intimately feel a derailleur and its chain shift through gears and sprockets, making a bicycle and its rider that much closer as a team. And while down tube shifters are more direct and sensitive, bar-end shifters are more casual and relaxed and they both are worthwhile cycling experiences.

Smooth shifting, easy to install and adjust

These really are smooth shifters, with a ratchet that equalizes the pressure for up and down shifts (when pulling against the derailleur spring, the ratchet keeps you from fighting the friction, and when shifting with the derailleur spring, friction keeps the lever from slipping). I'm currently using them with an 8-speed front derailleur, 10-speed rear derailleur, and 8-speed chain and cassette. When this chain and cassette wear out, I'll probably install 9-speed replacements. Because these are friction shifters, everything will still work.

They also make gear cable installation quick and easy. Just install the cable, pull it snug, and tighten down the fixing bolt. Because they aren't indexed, you don't have to worry about pull ratios or precisely adjusting the cable tension to get the derailleur to line up with each cog.

I haven't used friction shifters since the late 80s, but I picked it back up immediately. Just pull the lever until it shifts, and then move it back just the tiniest smidge to trim. It's harder to describe and think about than it is to do. Do it by feel and you'll have it in no time. Channel your inner Jedi, and imagine the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi whispering in your ear, "Use the Friction, Luke."
