Generally it is the crank model that determines spindle length, so check what spindle length the crank manufacturer recommends or measure your old BB. If between sizes, it's usually wise to choose the longer.

So far I have ridden about 70 miles with this bottom bracket on my single speed and they feel smooth. The silver matches the other silver parts on my bike and overall, I have nothing to complain about!

Great addition to my '88 Cannondale SM500

After finding the '88 SM500 in my size locally, I decided to build an ATB for around town errands and local trails. I raided the used parts stash and added a few VO parts to finish the project. The New Albion Cycle XDT triple (removed from a bike I sold) recommended the 113mm bottom bracket which was paired with Alivio T4000 3x9 setup. The bottom bracket installed easily and the spindle turned smoothly but was initially a bit stiff but that resolved itself after some riding time. Chain line is great and shifting is smooth and predictable. Bike also received VO Hot bars, VO stem, and upgraded to a VO stem last weekend. Love the look, love the quality, and love the end results! The Bottom Bracket works!

Regarding the title and the type of device, what else would you expect? Like all the sealed bearing bottom brackets I have dealt with, the outer seals are a bit stiff as new, but the spindle still feels smooth. The finish is nice, even on the parts that are not visible once in place, and the ring for the non-drive side is aluminum instead of plastic, as was usual for Shimano BBs for a long time. Several time I have had the plastic ring disintegrate when I removed them from older frames; this should be fine if you use some anti-seize compound. This BB installed well with the Shimano-style BB wrench, and put my Sugino SD triple crank in the right place on my resurrected Trek TX500 frame.

The answer to my axle length question.

Existing Bottom bracket length of 116 + 4r placed my chain rings so shifting to the larger cogs on the cassette was not always what I expected. Thought I would try one more time to relocate the drive side arm inward. I have TA crank with JIS taper and the 118mm VO BB was offset just enough to solve this problem. Easy to install and smooth rotation under load. Good product for the price.
