Generally it is the crank model that determines spindle length, so check what spindle length the crank manufacturer recommends or measure your old BB. If between sizes, it's usually wise to choose the longer.

The Bottom Bracket works!

Regarding the title and the type of device, what else would you expect? Like all the sealed bearing bottom brackets I have dealt with, the outer seals are a bit stiff as new, but the spindle still feels smooth. The finish is nice, even on the parts that are not visible once in place, and the ring for the non-drive side is aluminum instead of plastic, as was usual for Shimano BBs for a long time. Several time I have had the plastic ring disintegrate when I removed them from older frames; this should be fine if you use some anti-seize compound. This BB installed well with the Shimano-style BB wrench, and put my Sugino SD triple crank in the right place on my resurrected Trek TX500 frame.

The answer to my axle length question.

Existing Bottom bracket length of 116 + 4r placed my chain rings so shifting to the larger cogs on the cassette was not always what I expected. Thought I would try one more time to relocate the drive side arm inward. I have TA crank with JIS taper and the 118mm VO BB was offset just enough to solve this problem. Easy to install and smooth rotation under load. Good product for the price.

127mm BB is perfect fit for Surly Long Haul Trucker

I had bought the Grand Cru crankset two or three years ago and now that I purchased the 127mm BB it works great. Previously I had been having problems shifting into the lowest chainring. I problem I had with a previous 80's Motobecane crank, also. I was using a Shimano BB-UN55 127mm which is symmetrical. I finally spent the time to measure the chain line and it looked to be off by about 2mm. Lo' and behold the Velo Orange 127mm BB is offset by about 2mm. Problem solved! Wish the description said that before I bought the spacers that I now don't need. c'est la vie.
