These Post Mount Equal Disc Brakes from Growtac provide excellent modulation and power with a compact and lightweight design - perfect for your gravel, touring, or all-road bike.

In testing, we've found that the modulation is predictable, the caliper and system stiffness is confidence-inspiring, and the lever feel is natural and comfortable - offering superior performance compared to most other mechanical disc brake calipers on the market.

Equal brakes are developed and manufactured in Japan.

  • Cable Pull: Road, short pull

After an initial issue with the setting bolts loosening up on a long gravel ride, the ease of maintenance beats the Hayes and TRP Spyres I've used previously. Currently using them with Tiagra Shimano Road levers and the stopping power is intense.

Growtac Equal - Small but Mighty!

I have a coupled road travel tandem. Hydraulic brakes aren’t practical in my situation. I’ve tried several cable-activated and hybrid brakes including Avid BB7, TRP Spyre, TRP Hy/Rd, Juin Tech GT-P, and Paul Klamper. These are the first brakes that have truly felt like the hydraulics on my mountain bike. They engage quickly and with great power. Much easier on my hands as I don’t have to squeeze the brakes so hard now. Yet there is still the ability to feather the brakes, using a lighter touch. The brakes are easy to set up, once you’ve got all the housing cut and in place. That’s the challenging part. Follow the Growtac instructions. I’ve always used the other major brand of compressionless housing. The Growtac housing is better, albeit a half millimeter thicker. The pads are quiet and seem to be very high quality. I think the key to success with these brakes is to look at all of the components as a system. I used their compressionless housing but also used small pieces of their standard housing at the curves by the brifters. I installed the calipers and I used their specific pads. I’m convinced the outcome is optimal this way. Finally, these brakes are compact and really beautiful. Expensive, but very worth it.

nice brakes

They work well, setup was a breeze, nice compact size. The only down side is the way to adjust the pads. I'll need to carry an extra 3mm wrench (the usual ones that I carry are not long enough to reach in there). Cutting the compression resistant housing was tricky (clean ends are difficult and required the use of a grinder for clean up).

Worth the Wait

I waited several months to get these in the color I wanted for a Salsa Fargo upgrade for which I wanted the ease of maintaining mechanics brakes. They were well worth the wait! Definitely pricey for a mechanical brake, but by far the strongest I’ve used and near the stopping power of the Shimano hydraulics on my other bike (I can lock up easily with one finger on Apex levers).
Box came with all parts needed including compressionless housing and easy-to-follow installation instructions. Prior to buying these, I dabbled with hybrid brakes on the Fargo and I regret that time and money wasted. Should’ve gone with Growtecs from the start.
