I replaced the Shimano Claris 8-speed drivetrain on my Miyata road bike with a Shimano Nexus Inter-8 internal gear hub (I also built the wheel myself). Since the rear dropout is a vertical type, I needed a mechanism to maintain chain tension. I wanted to avoid using a spring-type chain tensioner mounted on the derailleur hanger as much as possible.
In Japan, I couldn’t find an eccentric bottom bracket, so I ordered one directly from the Velo Orange website. I’m truly grateful that Velo Orange offers international shipping. In my case, the item arrived in 10 days from the order date, including customs clearance in Japan. USPS’s tracking service was very detailed and kept me informed until I picked it up at my local post office.
The product came with installation instructions, but I was surprised to find that it advised not to apply grease to the bottom bracket, and that the grub screws for securing the sleeve was listed as 2.5mm, not 2mm as stated on the website instructions. I used Park Tool’s Anti-Seize Compound instead of grease. The grub screws were indeed 2.5mm as described in the printed instructions.
Installation and chain tension adjustment were both very easy. When threading the BB into the frame using the included lockring wrench, the recommended torque was listed as 35–45 Nm, and even at that torque, the sleeve didn’t slip or spin freely.
According to my measurements, the spacers included were two each of 0.4mm, 1mm, and 2.4mm. When assembling the Inter-8 sprocket in the inward position, the chain line becomes 42.7mm. I measured the chain line of the chainring with only the inner ring remaining, and it was 40.5mm. So, I installed the 1mm and 0.4mm spacers on the drive side, but then the safety tab on the non-drive side of the Shimano HOLLOWTECH II crank could no longer engage. As a result, I had to remove the 0.4mm spacer and use only the 1mm spacer, which allowed the safety tab to engage properly. The bottom bracket shell width is 68mm. I did not use the wave washer.
Compared to the Philcentric from Phil Wood, the Velo Orange product is more affordable and doesn’t require purchasing expensive proprietary tools, which is a major advantage. The grub screws fixation has been completely trouble-free so far. The #6805 bearings used are inexpensive, so replacement should be low-cost as well.
My bike originally had Shimano Claris a square taper 3-piece crankset, but I switched to an Claris R2000 series 2-piece crankset to use with the Velo Orange bottom bracket. Since I don’t use the outer chainring, I removed it, which required replacing the chainring bolts with shorter 6mm ones. The original bolts were too long for a single chainring setup.

Perfect for the limitations of a threaded BB

I snagged one of these for a super clean single speed build. Unfortunately, given the space limitations of a threaded BB, there’s not a ton of room for adjustment, but it’s better than nothing at all! I have no fear of dropping a chain as it is setup currently, but if this was a fixed drivetrain setup, I would be weary to run it as is.

It fit on my 2019 Kona Rove NRB DL with no issues. A different chainring/sprocket combo would eat more of the slack I have in my chain. No creaking yet after about 50 miles of really standing on the cranks.

I wouldn’t hesitate to pick one up again for a similar build.

Great quality material

I was very impressed with the quality of how the product was made. Sadly there was not enough adjustment for me to get the slack out without a half link or put the tensioner back on.

Eccentric BB is Great

First time using this product and it set up seper easy as described. Have one ride on it and it is holding just fine. Looking forward to putting some decent miles on it.
